The resurfaced Northeast softwoods reveal the bare figure, grain and color of the woods that may vary in species – between pine, spruce and fir – but only subtly to the eye. These are together, the most local old growth woods that are salvaged – primarily from 19th and early 20th c apartment houses. Although soft, the light wood tones and exposed character marks have made them a popular option for paneling and other vertical applications, like doors and planters.

Color and Surface

The color tones are light to medium tans and browns. After planing and removing the aged surface, the bare wood exposes the subtle variations in color tone, grain and figure among the species; as well as nail holes, stress cracks and other marks that were obscured by the aged surface. The result can project a fresh modern quality across the broad planks, that nonetheless reveals the woods character and history.

Nature and Culture

These conifers were overlooked by the early lumberman in pursuit of the white pine, but towards the late 1800’s, their virtues and adequacy for construction made them important commercial timbers. Each species possesses unique characteristics for the forest environment and contribution to the old growth forest; whether it being the towering white pine, shade tolerant Eastern hemlock, or red spruce of the more Northern regions.
