The Rift and Quarter Natural grade selects the best rift and quarter sawn portions of live sawn lumber. This cut eliminates cathedral grain and highlights straight grain patterns in the wood figure, natural color variation, and the tree’s authentic character such as occasional knots and mineral streaks. Quarter sawn figure is especially sought for their medullary rays—often known as ray fleck or figure—visible on the face of the board. Historically popular in homes from the late 1800s to early 1900s, true quarter sawn figure is created with annual growth rings angled 60 to 90 degrees to the board’s face. This orientation creates the most dimensionally stable floor, as seasonal movement happens in the thickness, not the width. Our Rift and Quarter Natural grade produces this aesthetic while efficiently using the log. Full 100% quarter sawn options are also available.
